Apple Murex
Phyllonotus pomum
The apple murex has another common name among collectors-the "rock shell". When found in tidal pools it not only looks like a rock, but when picked up it feels like a rock. Although the murex family is known for its beautiful spines throughout the world, the apple murex is virtually spineless, having large hard ridges instead.
While the apple murex doesn't show any difference in patterns, there is a wide range of color forms. The shells are tinged and blotched with various amounts of white, cream, tan, brown and black. Brown and tan are the most frequently found colors. While gray is sometimes present it is unusual to find specimens which exhibit only black and white like the smallest shell.
This shell must be extremely hearty. They are still very easy to find and more often than not will be alive when found in water.
